Hiwot Abebaw is a fifth year medical student at the School of Medicine, College of Health Sciences, Addis Ababa University. She was born and raised in the capital, Addis. Her lifelong dream of becoming a doctor came true when she joined one of the best programs in the country in 2009. When she was a third year medical student, she was elected president of Ethiopian Medical Students Association – Addis Ababa (EMSA AA) where she worked for a yearand isa member of IFMSA (International federation of medical students association) since 2005. It was a position where she gained lots of experience like working closely with the school administrators, writing and implementing different proposals and making public speeches. She has attended international meetings for example the 13th world public health congress in Ethiopia and IFMSA 61st August meeting in India. She is especially interested in charity work and organized medical screening programs for orphans and underprivileged school children at different schools which is a huge accomplishment. She strongly believes that helping others is the best thing one can do in a life time. She would like to one day become a neurosurgeon and help the people of her country struggling with lack of adequate medical professionals.
