Professor Marietjie de Villiers, MBChB, MFamMed, FCFP, PhD is Principal Investigator for Stellenbosch University Rural MEPI project (SURMEPI). She is Professor in Family Medicine and Primary Care and Deputy Dean: Education, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Stellenbosch University, Cape Town, South Africa. She is currently responsible for curriculum development, educational innovation, programme implementation and quality assurance on undergraduate, postgraduate in continuing education levels at the faculty. Prof de Villiers has served on the Medical and Dental Professions Board and the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and lead the reconfiguration of the national continuing professional development system for 12 professional boards and the establishment of various ethical guidelines for the HPCSA. Prof de Villiers is the author of a chapter on patient-centered care in the SA Handbook of Family Medicine and has published many articles with a particular focus on medical education for community and rural practice.
