"South Africa has a proud and continuing tradition oftraining competent and experienced surgeons. The challenges accompanying the restructuring of so complex a country, providing equity in access to health care, and addressing the needs of remote, impoverished rural communities will inevitably mean change in the way we have previously done things. Many of the challenges, though, are not unique to this country and its history. Our achievements in the recent past give us confidence that we will continue to be able not only to maintain standards but move forward, reaching out beyond our borders to the rest of the continent."
