"In Africa between the Sahara and the Republic of South Africa there live some 160,000,000 people. These dwellers in Tropical Africa suffer widely both from diseases of their own and, increasingly, from conditions with which we are familiar here. They need physi- cians, and a dozen kinds of coworkers associated with physicians. Doctors are needed not only to cure the sick, but also to show communities and peoples how to prevent illness, and to research into the mysteries, yet unsolved, of strange diseases."
