Medical Education, 2003
"Enthusiastic support was provided for the World Conference of the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) on Global Standards for Medical Education, held on 15)19 March 2003 in Copenhagen, Denmark. This initiative represented the first attempt by the WFME to develop such standards in response to the increasing internationalisation of medical education. A unique feature of the Standards is that they are presented at 2 levels. The basic level must be met by all schools ⁄ institutions, whilst the development level provides a goal towards which schools should strive to achieve to improve quality. As the Basic Standards had already been published1,2 and accepted by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the World Medical Association (WMA), what makes this endorsement significant and how does it influence future developments?"
