Medical education is rapidly growing in sub‐Saharan Africa, led by the faculties of almost two hundred
medical schools in the region. The work these faculties participate in and the growing numbers of students hold the promise of improving the health of their nations.
The Medical Education Partnership Initiative aims to support these faculties’ endeavors through locally‐ led innovative programs. MEPI institutions are updating curricula, increasing their use of technologies, and conducting research which can be operationalized into policy. MEPI is funded by the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), administered by NIH and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), and led by the Principal Investigators from
thirteen diverse African medical schools. This five‐year initiative aims to increase the capacity and quality of African medical education, improve retention of medical graduates, and promote regionally relevant research in sub‐Saharan African medical schools.
The Initiative’s Second Annual Symposium, Building Partnership and Enhancing Sustainability, brings together a network of 33 African, 17 US, two British, and one Canadian medical schools and teaching hospitals, policy makers from 13 countries, and local and international partners to review our progress, strengthen our partnerships, and strategize to sustain MEPI’s impact into the future....
