A primary goal of MEPI is to invest in regionally relevant research in Sub-Saharan Africa. Every MEPI program has included activities to increase research capacity, many of which can be classified as components of Research Support Centers (RSC). Four of the awards have embarked on establishing RSCs in various capacities. Eight of the eleven programmatic awards include activities which can be encompassed in an RSC, including: grants management, pre and post award support, IRB/eIRB, compliance, faculty mentoring, grant writing assistance and clearinghouse for research opportunities. It will be critical for the RSC TWG to map out the minimum necessary components of an RSC to provide of sustainable, scalable model to MEPI schools.
The Fogarty International Center (FIC) has announced the initiative on Research and Innovation Management (iRIM), which will provide a one year supplemental funding to current MEPI and IEARDA grants to foster, stimulate, or expand research administration capacity and training.
