Doctor Margaret Brewinski-Isaacs is a physician with the US Government Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and a Lieutenant in the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. She serves as the team lead for the Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI) and project officer for the HRSA supported MEPI programs with Addis Ababa University and the GW Coordinating Center. She is also a member of the PEPFAR Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) and Pediatric HIV Technical Working Group and the UN Interagency Task Team on PMTCT’s Child Survival Working Group.
Dr. Brewinski-Isaacs completed medical school at Wake Forest University. She then went on to the Johns Hopkins Hospital and Bloomberg School of Public Health for a residency in Pediatrics followed by a second residency in Preventive Medicine and a Masters in Public Health, focusing on global and maternal/child health.
Previous experience includes serving as the Immunization Officer in Guyana with the Pan American Health Organization. In this role, Dr. Brewinski-Isaacs worked daily with the Guyana Ministry of Health and regional and international partners to improve disease surveillance, outbreak response, cold chain management, outreach for hard to reach communities and both routine and targeted Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) activities.
She has also worked with the US Agency for International Development (USAID) as the Senior Technical Advisor for PMTCT and Pediatric HIV and as USAID chair of the PEPFAR PMTCT and Pediatric HIV Technical Working Group. Responsibilities included provision of technical support to Ministries of Health, implementing partners and USG/PEPFAR country teams in Africa, Latin America and Asia. She also worked closely with UN Agencies, particularly WHO, UNICEF and UNAIDS, to ensure harmonization of efforts around PMTCT and Pediatric HIV with USAID and PEPFAR activities. She also served on the 2010 guidelines review committees for both the WHO Guidelines on PMTCT and on Treatment of Pediatric HIV.
Dr. Brewinski-Isaacs’ publications include work on complications of HIV treatment in children, PMTCT and general pediatrics.
