Steve B. Kamiza was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor of Anatomical Pathology at the University of Malawi in the year 2012. He qualified as a Fellow of the College of South African Pathologist s (FC PATH (SA) anat. In October2003, he returned to Malawi in 2004 and joined the only two pathologists in the country. He practiced as a lone surgical diagnostic pathologist for the country from 2007 – 2011 after the retirement of his senior colleague Professor George Liomba. Steve is a third born in a family of eleven children from a humble and poor family. He attended his primary and secondary schools in Blantyre city, and was selected to University of Malawi Chancellor College to study Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in 1987. In the second year of the program, he was amongst the few top students who were selected to study medicine in Scotland, UK. After three years of pre-clinical studies, he transferred to St. Batholomew’s College Hospital(University College of London) for the later part of the training program. He finally graduated with an MB; BS degree at the University of Malawi in 1994. Dr. Kamiza run a rural district hospital for 2yrs with a catchment area of 800,000 population as the only medical doctor before joining Malawi college of Medicine to pursue an academic career. He got a scholarship to study anatomical pathology through Fogarty funding at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 1999 where he studied for two years before moving on to complete his training course at University of Natal in Durban. At the Malawi medical school, he served in various administrative positions including; the head of department, the deputy dean and currently the vice principal. He is very active in cancer and cerebral malaria research through which he has 20 publications in per reviewed journals.
