Professor Emiola Oluwabunmi Olapade-Olaopa is an ACHEST Advisory Committee Member and a Professor in the Department of Surgery, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan (CMUI), Ibadan, Nigeria. He trained in general surgery and urology (basic and higher level) in the United Kingdom from 1990-1999 and successfully completed his Doctorate degree in Medicine of the University of Leiciester in 2000. He then went to the United States for further (Fellowship level) training/experience in Urology as a Clinical Fellow and Lecturer at the Section of Urology, University of Michigan Medical Center, Ann Arbor, Michigan from 1999-2000. He later was elected into Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons in 2004. A medical graduate of the University of Ibadan (1986), he returned to join the Faculty of his alma mater in 2000. Since then, in addition to his undergraduate teaching responsibilities, he is involved in the training of surgical residents and other post-graduate students. He has also carried out research studies in urology, surgery-in-general, and education resulting in presentations at national and international scientific meetings and publications in learned journals. He has won a number of national and international awards and scholarships. Concomitant with these, he has had an increasing responsibility at all levels of the University and Teaching Hospital administration especially in the areas of strategic matters and policy development, undergraduate curricular matters, post-graduate studies/residency training, publications and discipline. He is the founder of the Ibadan Medical Specialist Group (UK), Ibadan’s first alumni association, which contributes to the development of the College as well to the improvement of the welfare of its students. Prof. Olapade-Olaopa attended the FAIMER Institute 2002 Fellowship in Medical Education. He has brought the skills acquired to bear in projects aimed at improving teaching and learning at CMUI and other medical schools and delivered several lectures on medical education. He served as the sub-Dean (Post-Graduate) of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences from 2004 to 2006. He was the Principal Investigator of the MacArthur Foundation funded College of Medicine Curriculum Review Committee which completed the first major review of the CMUI MBBS curriculum since its foundation. This resulted in the first home-grown MBBS curriculum in the sub-region which has since been adopted as the national template for medical and dental curricula. Prof. Olapade-Olaopa is a member of several national and international professional and scientific bodies and holds several offices in these organizations. He has been a participant at the invitation-only International Medical Educators Leadership Forum at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He is the a past chairman, CME Committee Oyo State Branch of the Nigerian Medical Association and a founding member of the Nigerian Association for Medical Education.
